The Centre for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials (CIQUS), was founded in 2010 by the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC). The mission of CIQUS consisted of achieving cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research in chemistry, biomedicine and molecular materials. CiQUS hosts around 19 research groups, including 3 ERC grantees. They publish almost 100 JCR papers/year, with an average impact factor of IF=7,1 (2016). Since 2013 we have obtained 3,6 m Eur/year from competitive R&D funds (30% international, 18% private), granted 10 patents (2 licensed) and collaborated in 3 new spin-offs.

Our research is dedicated to the elaboration and application of new catalytic methods in organic chemistry in order to facilitate new and better synthetic ways to organic molecules, specifically, in the synthesis of natural and synthetic bioactive products and in new organic materials.

1) WE OFFER well-defined nanosized graphenes obtained by solution chemistry. We can access homogeneous nanographenes with different sizes, peripheries and substitution. These graphene materials canbe particularly interesting for molecular optoelectronic applications. Reference: "From Perylene to a 22-Ring Aromatic Hydrocarbon in One-Pot". Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.,2014,53,9004 (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/anie.201403707/abstract). 2) WE OFFER substituted polyaromatics to be used as building blocks in the preparation of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) of graphenequantum dots (GQDs). These designed monomers have shown to be useful for the on-surface preparation of GNRs with diverse widths and lengths. Reference: "Substrate-Independent Growth of Atomically Precise Chiral Graphene Nanoribbons". ACS Nano,2016,10,9000 (http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acsnano.6b05269). In particular, this is a powerful approach to access GNRs substituted in the periphery with diverse functional groups which can modulate the properties of graphene materials. 1. NEW THERMOELECTIC MATERIALS. Oxide and nitride thin-films with improved thermoelectric efficiency. 2. ULTRA THIN-FILMS BY POLYMER ASSISTED DEPOSITION High quality thin-films and bilayers of different oxides, down to 4nm thick, by chemical deposition and with very good homogeneity even in large areas (proof of concept up to 1" substrate). - No vacuum chambers neither control of humidity or temperature are not required. The quality is comparable to that obtained by PLD: 1) Manganites, cobaltites (perovskites) and their combinations (LSMO/LCO/LMO) over STO/LAO/LaAlO3. 2) YIG (Yttrium Iron Garnet) over GGG (Gadolinium Gallium Garnet). 3) ZnO over sapphire. 4) PAD combined with MBE, e.g. integrated functional oxide thin films on silicon substrates: LCO (15 nm) deposited by PAD on top of a STO buffer (10 nm) grown by MBE on a (001)-Si substrate with sharp interfaces. 3. MICROTHERMAL SENSOR WITH IMPROVED TEMPORAL, SPATIAL AND THERMAL RESOLUTION. The aim of the ERC - Proof of Concept Project "ANTS" (http://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/205775_en.html), is to develop a new technology of microthermal sensing with highly improved thermal, temporal (below 1 second!) and spatial (micron) resolution, to be the basis of a breakthroug micro/nano-calorimeter. The active sensing elements are composed of a single permalloy lines, easy to deposit by sputtering, thus offering important advantages for miniaturization. Implementation of this technology on non planar surfaces is possible, consitituting an important adavantage for fast detection in microfluidic channels.
